The Perils of Falling Asleep

In Acts 20:1-12, we encounter a powerful call to spiritual awakening within the life of the church. This passage reveals four essential dimensions of God's work among His people that we dare not sleep through. First, we see God's love displayed through Paul's tender embrace and encouragement of the Ephesian believers after a terrifying riot—reminding us that God loves His people through His people. Second, we witness God's providence as Paul navigates plots against his life while collecting offerings from multiple churches to support struggling believers in Jerusalem, demonstrating how God orchestrates circumstances and provides through His body. Third, we observe God's communion with us as believers gather on the first day of the week—the Lord's Day—to break bread and hear the Word preached for hours, revealing a hunger for God's presence that challenges our consumeristic approach to church. Finally, we see God's resurrection power when young Eutychus falls from a third-story window and dies, only to be restored to life through Paul's prayer. This account confronts us with a sobering question: Are we truly awake to what God is doing in His church, or are we merely attending while spiritually asleep? The message calls us beyond passive attendance to active engagement in community, reordered priorities, and genuine spiritual vitality. What looks dead in our lives is not beyond the reach of Jesus—He still brings dead things back to life when we wake up to His work among us.
