Anointing Christ - A Mother's Day Sermon

May 10, 2026    Pastor Jose Prado

In this powerful exploration of Mark 14:3-9, we encounter a profound truth that challenges our modern understanding of worth and devotion. The story of the unnamed woman who breaks open her alabaster jar of expensive perfume to anoint Jesus reveals what heaven values most: extravagant, unreserved worship. While critics around her calculated the financial waste—300 denarii that could have fed the poor—Jesus saw something entirely different. He saw beauty. He saw prophetic understanding. He saw a heart that recognized His supreme worth. This narrative speaks directly to those of us who pour ourselves out in hidden ways, particularly mothers who sacrifice daily without applause or recognition. The world measures success by efficiency and productivity, but Jesus measures beauty by devotion. When we give our best to Christ—whether through parenting, prayer, service, or sacrifice—we're not wasting our lives. We're living the most beautiful life possible. The woman's act wasn't forgotten; it's been proclaimed for two thousand years wherever the gospel is preached. Similarly, our acts of faithfulness, done in secret and devotion to Christ, are never forgotten by heaven. This message invites us to examine our own lives: Are we holding back our 'alabaster jars,' or are we breaking them open in worship? Are we living for the applause of people or the approval of Jesus?
